“Every time we watch this I wonder why we don’t watch this every year,” my mother-in-law said last night as we gathered together to watch Muppet Christmas Carol. “It only has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes!” cried my husband, gasping at his computer screen. “That is at least 30% less than it ought to have.”
He is quite right.
Say what you like about the Muppets, but Muppet Christmas Carol is a great movie and arguably the best production of A Christmas Carol ever made. Michael Caine mesmerizes viewers with his performance as Scrooge, and the Muppets fit their Dickensian roles so well I almost forget they are in fact Kermit and Gonzo. The humor is enchanting and the sets are adorable. Best of all is the music, custom created for this production and extremely catchy. In case you are tired of watching Elf, (not to dock another great movie, it just seems to run non-stop on TV), switch on Muppet Christmas Carol and bob your head along to the wonderful, heartfelt tunes.
For your viewing pleasure, here are some of the best numbers, including the one in which Michael Caine sings and frolicks (and why wouldn’t you want to see that!):
